When Expectations Break: Finding Hope in the Unexpected

Mother’s Day can be beautiful, but for many women it also carries grief, disappointment, loneliness, and broken expectations.
For some, it’s a reminder of loss. For others, it’s the ache of strained relationships, unanswered prayers, or dreams that didn’t unfold the way they hoped. In those places of hurt, God still sees us.

In 1 Kings 17, we meet the widow of Zarephath. A young woman whose life had already been marked by tragedy. She had lost her husband during a devastating famine and was preparing what she believed would be her final meal for herself and her son before they starved to death.
Then God sent the prophet Elijah to her home. And through Elijah, God miraculously provided flour and oil that never ran out, sustaining her household day after day. But then the unexpected happened again—her son became sick and died.
After witnessing God’s provision, she suddenly found herself devastated and questioning everything. Elijah cried out to God, and God raised the boy back to life. In response, the widow declared, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth.”

Sometimes life feels exactly like that story. We hold onto hope, see God move, and then suddenly another hardship crashes into our lives. We wonder why the miracle we prayed for hasn’t come the way we expected.

Faith is not built on perfect circumstances. It is built on the presence of God in the middle of pain.

Unexpected things may change your life, but they do not define your life. You are not the sum of your heartbreak, loss, disappointment, or suffering.
You are deeply loved by God.

He sees every hidden grief.
He carries every heavy burden.
And He still calls His children to come near.

The promises of God remain true: He will never leave us. His mercies are new every morning. He is our refuge, our strength, and our hope. Even when life does not unfold the way we expected, we can still live with expectation that God will meet us faithfully in every season.
